Statice Standup - Recipe by Jill Slater

Materials for Two Seasonal Candlesticks:

Statice Standup
  • 15 Stems purples statice
  • 25 Stems dried wheat
  • Floral clippers and scissors
  • 1 Yard -inch wide ribbon
  • One-hard 2-inch wide decorative ribbon
  • 1 Straight pin
  • Floral preservative/food
Directions:
Step 1 - Gather three to five stems of statice in your hand. (If right handed, hold the flowers in your left hand and vice-versa.) Hold the stems vertically between your thumb, index finger & third finger. The lower you hold the flower stems, the larger in circumference the bouquet.

Step 2 - Begin the spiral placement by placing a small group of dried wheat at a 45°-degree angle against the rest of the bouquet. Do not lay the stems on top of each or let them cross, instead, lay them next to each other; keep all the stems at the same height.

Step 3 - After three to five stems have been added in this fashion, twist the bouquet (either clockwise or counter clockwise, depending on what feels comfortable in your hand).

Step 4 - Add additional statice and wheat using this same method, as in steps #2 and #3.

Step 5 - Bind the bouquet by wrapping the 1/4-inch wide ribbon several times around the flower stems. The bind is done where your hand held the flowers. Leave several inches of thread to tie off the bouquet. Bring the ribbon through the center of the flowers & pull tightly. Tie the ribbon to the loose end.

Step 6 - Cut the ends of the stems very straight and finish the bouquet off with the 2-inch wide decorative ribbon, simply wrap it around the bouquet, over the narrow ribbon and use the straight pin to pin it in place.

Step 7 - To make the bouquet literally stand on end, gently spread the stems, and if necessary, trim the center stems slightly shorter than the rest of the bouquet.

Step 8 - Place the bouquet in the center of the dining table, or keep it fresh by setting it in a low dish filled with water that has been treated with floral food/preservative.
